Hoover Dam was built from 1931-1935 over the Black Canyon's Colorado River at a cost of $49,000,000 and 112 lives. It's a National Historic Landmark and is a concrete arch-gravity dam that when completed was the world's largest electric generating plant and the world's largest concrete structure. The Grand Coulee Dam built in 1945 surpassed the Hoover in both respects.
The lake behind the dam is Lake Mead. As you can tell, the water level is quite low due to an ongoing drought.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was present at its opening dedication ceremonies in September 1934.
